MSU Sweeps Individual Hoop Awards
WRAPPED IN MAROON & WHITE: Mississippi State juniors Jarvis Varnado and Alexis Rack were named Mississippi's top male and female basketball players Monday night at the Museum.
Mississippi State, the only major college basketball program in the state to have both men’s and women’s teams participate in the NCAA playoffs, swept the individual player of the year honors Monday night March 30, 2009 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. Junior forward Alexis Rack was named the recipient of the 2009 Cellular South Gillom Trophy while fellow MSU student Jarvis Varnado was selected as the winner of the 2009 Cellular South Howell Trophy. Both honors are media-selected and given to the state’s top male and female basketball players for the season just concluded

Basketball Finalists Announced
USM's All-CUSA center Pauline Love is the only repeat entry among this year's finalists for the 2009 Cellular South Howell and Gillom Trophies.
Two Ole Miss men joined one Lady Rebel while Mississippi State and USM placed a finalist apiece in media voting for the 2009 Cellular South Howell Trophy and Cellular South Gillom Trophy which honor the state’s top men’s and women’s college basketball players. MSU center Jarvis Varnado and Lady Bulldogs guard Alexis Rack join Ole Miss’ David Huertas, Terrico White and Bianca Thomas along with USM’s Pauline Love to complete the three finalists for each award. The six finalists and their coaches are expected to be in attendance Monday March 30, 2009 when the trophy recipients are announced at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson, MS.

Basketball Awards Tickets Now on Sale
Mississippi's best college basketball players will be honored Monday March 30, 2009.
Tickets are now on sale for the Cellular South Howell & Cellular South Gillom Trophies which are awarded annually to Mississippi’s top men’s and women’s college basketball players as determined by media across Mississippi. The presentations will take place Monday March 30, 2009 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in Jackson, MS. The top three men’s players and top three women’s players will be present with their coaches. A reception starts at 5:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Also in attendance will be the namesakes of the two awards: former Ole Miss All-American Peggie Gillom and former Mississippi State All-American Bailey Howell.
