"Mr. Inside" Blanchard Dead at 84

Col. Doc Blanchard, a 1994 inductee in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, died of pneumonia April 19, 2009 in Bulverde, Texas. He was 84.
Blanchard won the Heisman Trophy in 1945 while playing at Army.A tough power runner, Blanchard was "Mr. Inside" to speedy 1946 Heisman Trophy winner Glen Davis' "Mr. Outside" in back-to-back undefeated national championship seasons for the Cadets.
Blanchard attended high school at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS where his Heisman, Maxwell and Sullivan Trophies are kept on permanent display. On loan from St. Stanislaus,the Museum displayed Blanchard's Heisman last year in a special exhibit entitled "Mississippi and the Heisman Trophy".

Nutt Added to Coaching-Rich Museum Scramble

Second-year Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt has been added to the field of the 17th Annual First Commercial Bank/ Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Scramble, bringing to four the number of current college head football coaches participating in the event.
Nutt joins head coaches Dan Mullen from MSU, Mississippi Valley's Willie Totten and Mike Dubose of Millsaps. Former head coaches participating are USM's Jeff Bower and Jim Carmody;and,former Alabama and NFL head coach Ray Perkins.
Among the celebrity players are Ray Guy, Kent Hull, Gentle Ben Williams, Warner Alford ; and, Don Kessinger. The tournament is Monday April 20, 2009 at the Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison, MS.

Mississippi State, the only major college basketball program in the state to have both men’s and women’s teams participate in the NCAA playoffs, swept the individual player of the year honors Monday night March 30, 2009 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.
Junior forward Alexis Rack was named the recipient of the 2009 Cellular South Gillom Trophy while fellow MSU student Jarvis Varnado was selected as the winner of the 2009 Cellular South Howell Trophy. Both honors are media-selected and given to the state’s top male and female basketball players for the season just concluded
