MSU Sweeps Individual Hoop Awards

WRAPPED IN MAROON & WHITE: Mississippi State juniors Jarvis Varnado and Alexis Rack were named Mississippi's top male and female basketball players Monday night at the Museum.

Mississippi State, the only major college basketball program in the state to have both men’s and women’s teams participate in the NCAA playoffs, swept the individual player honors Monday night March 30, 2009 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

Junior forward Alexis Rack was named the recipient of the 2009 Cellular South Gillom Trophy while fellow MSU student Jarvis Varnado was selected as the winner of the 2009 Cellular South Howell Trophy. Both honors are media-selected and given to the state’s top male and female basketball players for the season just concluded.

Varnado was the national leader in blocked shots and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year for the SEC tournament champions while Rack was the leading scorer on a Lady Bulldogs’ squad that upset Texas before falling to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

A pair of Ole Miss players, David Huertas and Terrico White were the other finalists for the men’s award while USM center Pauline Love and Ole Miss’ Bianca Thomas completed the women’s finalists.
