Ole Miss went 29-3-1 during Elmore's three letter-winning seasons in Oxford, helping the Rebels to a pair of national championships and three consecutive post season appearances in the Sugar and Gator Bowls. He was named a permanent team tri-captain of the 1961 squad as the quarterback of the nation's leading offense.
The Reform, AL native received All-American and All-SEC honors following the '61 season which earned him a spot in the Coaches All-America Game. He was also an All-SEC centerfielder on a pair of title-winning Rebel baseball teams, all the while excelling in the classroom as well. Elmore received Academic All-American honors in 1961.
"Jake Gibbs was already quarterbacking Ole Miss when Doug got there and Glynn Griffing was sharing time when he left," said Museum Executive Director Michael Rubenstein. "If Doug had had the spotlight all to himself for several seasons, there's no telling how his reputation might have grown."
The NFL thought highly of Elmore's abilities. The Washington Redskins drafted him after his junior year in 1960 with the Kansas City Chiefs drafting him in 1961. He spent the '62 season with the Skins.
Elmore was inducted into the Ole Miss M-Club Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
