Showalter, a former two-time American League manager of the year with the Yankees (1994) and Texas (2004) was also the first manager in Arizona Diamondbacks history. He earned All-American honors at Mississippi State in 1977 after hitting .459, still the sixth best season batting performance in SEC history.. Since leaving the dugout, Showalter has also served as an analyst with ESPN. “Buck’s a big league guy with great experiences and Mississippi roots,” said Museum Executive Director Michael Rubenstein. “We’re delighted to have him.”

The finalists and eventual recipient of the Cellular South Ferriss Trophy are selected by a panel of 25 Major League scouts, college coaches and a media representative. All players at all of Mississippi’s four-year baseball programs are eligible for the honor which has been presented annually since 2004.
