2008 marks the first year of the Cellular South Gillom Trophy which will be awarded to the top women's college basketball player in Mississippi.
Tupelo, MS will be the host city for the “Night of Nights” in Mississippi collegiate basketball as the site for the 2008 Cellular South Howell (men’s) and Cellular South Gillom (women’s) Trophies which will be awarded to the state’s top male and female basketball players on March 31, 2008.

The presentations will take place at the BancorpSouth Conference Center at 7:00 pm. A reception will precede the program starting at 5:30 pm. The top three female and top three male finalists for the award as selected by 45 statewide media voters will be in attendance with the recipients announced that night. The namesakes of the award, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductees Peggie Gillom and Bailey Howell, will also be present.
The Cellular South Howell Trophy has been awarded to Mississippi's best men's college basketball player since 2005.

“Basketball has always been huge in Northeast Mississippi,” said Museum Executive Director Michael Rubenstein. “It only makes sense that our first move outside of the Capital City for basketball should be to Tupelo.”

Jim Richmond, Corporate Communications Director at Cellular South added “Cellular South is proud to bring these trophy presentations to Tupelo and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to this area.”
“Having Tupelo host the award ceremony also gives basketball fans in the area the chance to be a part of these trophy presentations.”
