Delta State and Mississippi College have made the NCAA Divsion II and III fields respectively but its been a struggle for the state's other programs. None of Mississippi's six Division I basketball teams currently has a winning record.
The Cellular South Howell Trophy is named after Bailey Howell, a former Mississippi State All-American and six-time NBA All-Star who played on back-to-back Boston Celtic championship teams in 1968 and 1969. In 1997 he became the first male Mississippi player inducted in the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Lawrence Roberts from Mississippi State won last year's award.
