50 of Misssissippi's best high school athletes were honored at the second annual Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi PopStar Awards Thursday May 15, 2003 at the Museum.

The top three athletes in 20 girls and boys sports ranging from baseball to volleyball were honored with the awards named after long-time Jackson Public Schools athletic director W.C. "Pop"Allen.

"Attendance was way up over our first year last year,"said Museum Executive Director Michael Rubenstein."We were delighted with the response from athletes, parents and schools."

Three nominees in each sport and the eventual winner were selected by the sports department of The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi's largest newspaper.

"It was an honor and a privilege to showcase these talented young athletes of our state," said Katie Hester, a member of the Museum's board who helped organize the event. "The evening was dampened only by the death of our first Female Soccer PopStar, Courtney Hubert and her younger sister whose untimely death saddens us all."

A moment of silence was observed for Hubert and her 12-year old sister Erin who died in a car wreck two days before the ceremony.
