The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame’s 2010 induction class, announced Wednesday October 21, 2009 at the Museum, is one of the most varied in recent memory.
The six-member class, which will be honored at the 48th Annual BancorpSouth Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Weekend July 30-31, 2010, features a racial pioneer, a life-long amateur tennis champion, the granddaddy of Mississippi amateur runners, a former Super Bowl champion, the MSHOF’s second boxing inductee and its best known professional race car driver.
Henry Armstrong (posthumous): International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee; world champion in featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions; ranks 3rd all-time in boxing history with 101 knockouts behind Sugar Ray Robinson (109) and Archie Moore (141)
Allen Brown: Natchez, MS native who was an All-American and All-SEC end at Ole Miss and a member of three consecutive Green Bay championship teams including Super Bowls I and II.
Bob Coleman (posthumous): native Mississippian and co-founder of the Mississippi Track Club; started running against his doctor’s advice after suffering a heart attack at age 38 and outlived his physician by 20 years.
Frank Dowsing (posthumous): Tupelo, MS native who was an academic and football All-American at Mississippi State; one of two players to break the color barrier at MSU; first African-American to be elected Mr. MSU.
Ken Toler, Sr.: Greenville, MS native and Jackson, MS resident who has won numerous regional and national tennis honors at the seniors level from age 55 through age 70.
Lake Speed: Jackson, MS native and most prominent driver in state history; 18-years on the NASCAR circuit that produced one win (Darlington, SC 1988) and 75 top ten finishes; six-time U.S. Karting Association Champion and World Karting Champion prior to NASCAR competition.
